On this walk you will see breathtaking views over the ancient bridges, river vienne and village of Confolens; the ancient Chateaux of St Germain de Confolens and much more....

A Quiet Painting Retreat

The Charente is famous for its wealth of wild and often rare flowers and mushrooms. Not to mention its outstanding pretty viallages, castles, churches, streams and rivers, attracting both amateur and professional painters alike. The terrain is gently hilly, giving contour and texture to the eye.

All Things Historic

This would have to by my passion! So for those who like to explore the ancient; I can fully recommend the following:

Chassenon: A Gallo Roman Thermal Baths Complex, some 15 to 20 minutes away by car. This site is now known to be the biggest site in europe!! At its height it accommodated over 5,000 people and had some 20- or so pools used for various different treatments and purposes. Each year new discoveries are being made, for the moment there is an aquaduct, temple, furnaces for heating the water etc. Everything has been preserved in remarkable order. Guided tours and books in English available.

Melle - Silver Mines: These ancient mines date from the year 500 and were only discovered by accident when a new road was under construction. The underground mines run for many kilometers. An excellent afternoon's guided visit includes a tour of the mines and a detailed description of how the mines were operated and the production of the silver.

Oradore Sur Glane: The ruins of the town of Oradore Sur Glane remind us clearly of the horror of war. The village remains in much the same condition as it was found after it was burnt to the ground during the war, with cars and bicycles still standing in the road and pushchairs left outside the church doors... The remains of the tramway system and old electric posts, and the many "singer" sewing machines remind us of life as it was. A very moving visit.

A little further afield: I can recommend the roman ampitheatre at Saintes; and the subterrain church at Aubeterre sur Drome.

There are many more historic places for visiting, which I will be happy to provide you with details of...

Swimmers

For swimming lovers - Confolens boasts a beautiful swimming pool complex. Further afield there are any quantity of lakes with beach facilities and life guards in high season.

The sea and beaches are some 1 and a half hours away by car.

Confolens Folklore Festival

Circuit Du Val de Vienne

Val de Vienne Race Track

A wonderful opportunity for all racing car addicts to try it out for yourselves.  Book yourself a course which will teach you how to drive on a race track at fast speeds in all weathers, and in all cars or simply come and watch.

Cassinomagus Romn Baths

Probably the largest roman bath complex in the whole of europe!

Oradour sur Glane - Martyred Village

A truly memorable and horrific memorial.  Shocking and tearing at the heart-strings.  We can identify with the people of this town - and their torturious end.

The Centre was constructed in memory of those who died, but also in the hope that history will not be repeated, if we can learn from the errors of the generation who went before.

I found the memorial challenging.  I'm really pleased I have visited and paid my tribute and respects to those of Oradour.
